A wonderfully rare pair of Victorian bois durci & vulcanite cuff bracelets. The cameos are French Bois Durci (patented by Francis Charles Lepage in 1856 and made from pigs blood and sawdust). The lady has a classical appearance, that of a baccante maiden.
The gentleman is possibly a scholar. The cameos have been applied to vulcanite cuff bracelets, which pull open to place on wrist. The female cameo bracelet has a metal panel applied inside along with tiny screws to left side of bracelet which is either a repair in antiquity or merely how it was made as there is a totally straight join between the screws, that seems to suggest this? Please see photos and decide for yourself. Size: the bracelets are 50mm deep (to front cameo panels); the inner circumference at rest is approx 6.25", can be stretched out to approx max of 7.25".
As a guide from photos, my wrist circumference is 6.5. In good antique condition; some scuffs/marks commensurate with age & use.
Overall, a fascinating pair that can be worn together or separately, but either way, incredible in wear! This item is in the category "Jewellery & Watches\Vintage & Antique Jewellery\Mourning Jewellery". The seller is "darktallulah" and is located in this country: GB.
